ABOUT TAIKO

Taiko is the Japanese word for drum. Although the drums have existed for thousands of years and are part of Japanese cultural and religious traditions, use of the drums in an ensemble setting emerged in the early 1950s. Osuwa Daiko, formed by jazz drummer Daihachi Oguchi in 1951, is generally considered to be the first ensemble taiko group. Grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka introduced ensemble taiko to the United States in 1968 when he founded San Francisco Taiko Dojo. There are now hundreds of community, university, youth, and professional groups around the world. Taiko has also been used in performances by popular artists including Kanye West, Katy Perry, Alicia Keyes, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, and Cirque du Soleil (Mystère).
